Agility confirms wheeled robot study after Digit 5 launch
Agility Robotics has confirmed that it is exploring wheeled robot designs after a wheeled humanoid rendering appeared near the end of its Digit 5 launch video. CEO and chief robot officer Jonathan Hurst told The Robot Report that the company is considering multiple designs and form factors for different operating environments and customer requirements.
“We’re exploring a range of robot designs and form factors, including wheels,” Hurst said. He expects legged robots to address more applications as their safety, reliability and capabilities improve, but said other approaches could bring Agility’s robotics technology into additional environments sooner.
The company has not decided whether the concept could become a wheeled version of Digit or a separate platform. Hurst described the work as just beginning, and Agility has provided no development or commercialization timeline. The rendering should therefore be treated as an early design exploration rather than a product announcement.
The study comes as Agility prepares to go public through a SPAC with Churchill Capital Corp. XI. The transaction values Agility at $2.5 billion and is expected to generate more than $620 million in gross proceeds. According to The Robot Report, Agility disclosed $1.8 million in 2025 revenue and a $140 million operating loss in its S-4 filing.
Wheels offer lower energy consumption and simpler mechanics on flat floors, while legs retain an advantage on stairs and uneven terrain. For a company built around bipedal locomotion, examining both architectures is a practical response to the varied conditions found in industrial facilities.
