Deep Robotics tests DR02 humanoids on rainy Hangzhou roads
Deep Robotics deployed DR02 humanoid robots for traffic support and visitor guidance trials in Hangzhou’s Xihu District in early October, according to a company press release dated October 8, 2026. The tests covered busy intersections and Xixi National Wetland Park, with sustained rain adding an outdoor operating challenge.
The Deep Robotics DR02 trials combined traffic direction, spoken safety reminders and multilingual tourist assistance. The company described a batch of robots but did not disclose how many participated, how long each operated or whether the work involved remote supervision. Yahoo Finance carried the account as a paid press release distributed through ACCESS Newswire, rather than independently reported coverage.
Rain, moving traffic and pedestrian flows
At intersections including Zheda Road and West Wenyi Road in Lingyin Subdistrict, the company tested the robots’ ability to maintain duty in wet weather. Deep Robotics specifies IP66 whole machine protection for the humanoid and says the trials were intended to gather data on continuous operation during sustained rainfall. That is a concrete hardware specification, although the release provides no operating duration or reliability measurements.
Deep Robotics also says DR02 can navigate autonomously at intersections, avoid pedestrians and vehicles, and adjust its position and traffic directing hand signals to local conditions. The release does not explain how much of that capability was exercised without intervention during these trials, or provide navigation success rates. Operating among road users demands more evidence than showing that a robot can remain outdoors in rain.
For traffic safety assistance, the company says the robot’s visual recognition system can identify e-bike riders without helmets, illegal overloading, pedestrians crossing lines and vehicles stopping beyond lines. It then delivers spoken reminders and advisories. The described role is assistance to personnel, not autonomous enforcement: staff retained responsibilities requiring judgment, including accident handling and enforcement of key violations.
At locations with concentrated visitor traffic, DR02 also tested multilingual responses to questions about routes, transportation and scenic areas. The release does not identify the supported languages or report response accuracy. Deep Robotics says this work reduced repetitive inquiries directed at personnel, but supplies no measured workload reduction.
The practical robotics story is the attempt to combine outdoor mobility, visual detection and public interaction in one humanoid platform. The account remains a company description of product testing, not evidence of a contracted service or a routine municipal deployment. Deep Robotics says it will continue testing applications in traffic management, public services and urban governance.
