Tesla confirms Optimus production, targets late 2027 sales
Tesla now says its Fremont factory is producing its first production quality Optimus humanoids, with customer deliveries targeted for the end of 2027, according to Business Insider’s report on the company’s quarterly earnings announcement.
In its shareholder letter, Tesla described the current Optimus production process as suitable for a commercial product, TechCrunch reported. CEO Elon Musk nevertheless called it “early production” on the earnings call. The distinction is practical: Tesla is claiming manufacturing readiness while continuing to revise the hardware and assembly process.
Musk said reaching 20,000 robots a week at Fremont would take at least a year, according to Business Insider. That is a ramp target, not a reported output rate. The Fremont line is designed eventually to produce a million robots annually, while Tesla plans annual capacity of 10 million robots for a second line under construction in Austin.
The customer timetable concerns external deliveries rather than simply expanding Tesla’s own robot fleet. The Wall Street Journal reported that Musk said the company could be ready to ship Optimus to outside companies by the end of next year.
Tesla is also building an “Optimus Academy” where robots will practice tasks and generate training data, Musk said, according to Business Insider. He expects to release a video of Optimus within one or two months.
