St. Clair College Adds Unitree R1 for Humanoid Research

St. Clair College in Windsor has acquired a Unitree R1 humanoid robot for research and student work this fall, with the college described by WindsorNewsToday.ca as the first recipient of the newly released model in North America.

The robot stands about four feet tall and weighs 29 kg. It was purchased from Canadian company InDro Robotics, with support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, according to the report.

The acquisition is being framed as an applied research platform rather than a hallway novelty. The R1 can run, walk and dance, but St. Clair College says students and researchers will focus on practical industrial uses including process monitoring, quality inspection, materials handling, workforce training and automating repetitive or physically demanding tasks.

John Lopez, a program manager in the college’s Research and Innovation Department, said the work is aimed at understanding the humanoid’s capabilities, software and hardware, including how AI and large language models can be incorporated for industrial partners.

Nick Dimitrov, an industrial technology advisor with the National Research Council of Canada, linked the project to Canada’s productivity challenges, saying humanoid robots could help bridge that gap. The near term test will be whether a small campus research program can turn a general purpose humanoid platform into repeatable industrial workflows, rather than a sequence of demonstrations.
