Welcome, TALOS!
TALOS is a full size humanoid robot built by PAL Robotics for industrial research and advanced robotics development. Standing 175 cm tall and weighing 95 kg, it combines a 32 degree of freedom body with torque sensing across nearly every joint. This sensing supports controlled contact and responsive whole body movement when interacting with equipment and workspaces. TALOS carries up to 6 kg per arm at full reach, while brushless DC motors, harmonic drive reducers, and an aluminium frame provide its mechanical foundation. Its three finger grippers are designed for practical object handling, and its maximum speed is 3 km/h. The robot runs for up to three hours per charge and operates with Ubuntu LTS, Linux RT Preempt, ROS, and OROCOS. Its computing hardware includes two Intel Core i7 COM Express Type 6 processors, supported by EtherCAT, Ethernet, and WiFi connectivity. A head mounted RGB D camera provides colour and depth perception. With a Humanoid Guide Skill Score of 3 out of 10, TALOS is a developing humanoid platform, rated 2 out of 5 for navigation and 1 out of 5 for manipulation.
Walking stairs is a defining physical capability for TALOS, enabling it to operate across facilities where changes in floor level matter. Stair walking requires coordinated leg motion, balance, sensing, and sustained control of the full body, making it relevant to research into mobile humanoid work. TALOS also assembles products, connecting biped mobility with task oriented manipulation in industrial settings. This capability supports studies of how humanoid systems can move through a workspace, approach an assembly area, and contribute to structured production processes. Together, walking stairs and assembling products make TALOS useful for researchers and engineering teams developing workflows that require both locomotion and hands on interaction. The platform provides a concrete environment for testing repeatable humanoid behavior in industrial research programs.
TALOS is in production and is manufactured by PAL Robotics, a robotics company based in Barcelona, Spain. The platform is positioned for industrial research and academic research, where teams can use a full size humanoid system to investigate embodied AI, control, perception, and physical automation. Full ROS support makes TALOS relevant to laboratories that build custom software, integrate sensors, and develop task specific robotic applications. Its torque sensing architecture and real time control capabilities give researchers an established platform for experiments involving contact rich robotics. TALOS also represents the continuing role of research humanoids in turning advances in software and mechatronics into systems that can be evaluated in real environments. It offers a shared foundation for global robotics teams pursuing more capable human shaped machines.
