Welcome, Tau Humanoid!

Tau Humanoid is a humanoid robot developed by Tau Robotics, a San Francisco startup founded in 2024, for home and office cleaning services. Standing 132 centimetres tall and weighing 35 kilograms, it uses electric joint motors, planetary reducers, and a structure made from aluminium alloy and engineering plastics. Its listed maximum speed is 7 kilometres per hour, with a runtime of two hours per charge. Each gripper has two fingers, giving the robot a different manipulation arrangement from humanoids equipped with articulated humanlike hands. Its supported capabilities include obstacle avoidance, sorting goods, filling and emptying a dishwasher, and folding clothes. A Humanoid Guide Skill Score of 4 out of 10 places it in the developing category, with navigation rated 1 out of 5 and manipulation rated 3 out of 5. These ratings indicate stronger manipulation performance than navigation performance within the scoring framework. Operation combines AI assistance with remote human guidance, rather than fully independent execution of household work. AI supports balance and smooth motion while trained operators direct tasks.

Obstacle avoidance supports movement through spaces where furniture and household objects constrain access. Sorting goods provides a practical manipulation use case for organizing items, while filling and emptying a dishwasher brings object handling into a familiar domestic workflow. Folding clothes adds another supported task involving the handling of flexible materials. Together, these capabilities emphasize household manipulation rather than advanced athletic movement. The navigation rating remains at a lower tier than the manipulation rating, an important distinction when considering the robot for environments that require both movement and object handling. Remote human direction remains part of the operating model, so these supported tasks should not be interpreted as evidence of unrestricted autonomy. The practical focus is assistance with recurring household activities under supervision.

Tau Humanoid is listed as in production, and Tau Robotics offers its robots through a cleaning service rather than relying solely on equipment sales. Customers book a one hour visit at $30 per robot, with two robots usually working together. This service model lets households access humanoid assistance without purchasing and maintaining a robot themselves. Each visit requires remote human supervision and an adult to be present, with communication limited to one way audio. These conditions are central to understanding the current offering. Its broader significance lies in bringing developing humanoid technology into ordinary homes through a supervised commercial service. The combination of customer bookings, human operators, and physical robots represents a practical deployment approach while autonomous capabilities continue to develop.
