BYD confirms August unveiling for first humanoid robot

BYD has confirmed plans to unveil its first humanoid robot in August at its Di Space venue network, according to an article posted on moomoo.com that cites China Securities Journal.

The Chinese new energy vehicle maker is entering a crowded robotics race among automakers, but the first public material is thin on engineering detail. A WeChat account for BYD’s Zhengzhou Di Space venue posted a teaser image on Jul 25 pointing to an early August debut, with copy that emphasized interaction rather than specifications.

“It won’t show up with a pile of specs and jargon,” the poster said. “Maybe when you walk closer, it moves slightly.”

Di Space is described in the source as BYD’s offline science education and experience venue network. That setting suggests the August appearance may be a public prototype showing built around customer interaction, not a technical launch with payload, actuation, autonomy, battery, or pricing data.

BYD links robotics to manufacturing depth

BYD executives have been preparing the ground for a humanoid program. Executive vice president Stella Li said in a talk show that the company was developing robots, and argued that robot competition depends on manufacturing capability as well as software and hardware strength.

Li also said automotive capabilities and robotics technology share common roots. According to the source, BYD plans to build an open platform that can support both in house robots and products developed with other companies.

The company reportedly set up a dedicated team in late 2024 under its 15th Business Division to develop embodied artificial intelligence products, including humanoid robots. Li said last month that she hopes every BYD store will eventually have two or three robots to introduce and demonstrate vehicles to customers, with robot sales advisors ready for real world use in the next year or two.

She added a useful constraint: robots cannot replace the emotional connection between human salespeople and customers. For a first BYD humanoid robot, that points more toward guided retail assistance and brand experience than immediate factory labor.

BYD is not alone among Chinese automakers. The source says Chery incubated brand Aimoga has begun selling humanoid robots to consumers, SAIC-GM has deployed wheeled humanoid robots on battery assembly lines, and Xpeng plans to start mass production of its Iron humanoid robot by the end of this year.
