Description

Tacta Hand aims to give robots a real sense of touch, not just movement. Veteran entrepreneurs founded Tacta Systems, the company behind it, in Palo Alto, California. The hand has five fingers and 15 degrees of freedom, so it moves with genuine human-like dexterity. Additionally, it uses a proprietary technology called Fluidic Tendon actuation, where fluid moving through internal cables pushes small pistons that drive each finger. As a result, the hand stays precise and strong without packing bulky motors into the fingers themselves. Each finger can lift up to 25 newtons, or roughly 2.5 kilograms of force at the fingertip.

Touch is where Tacta Hand really breaks new ground. Its sensors are smaller than a grain of sand, yet they detect force, texture, slip, and even temperature. Consequently, the hand can feel the difference between a secure grip and one that’s about to fail. It also samples touch data 400 times per second, so it reacts almost instantly to changes in contact. Because of this sensitivity, Tacta pairs the hand with a wearable glove that captures how real workers use their hands. Workers simply do the task they already know, and that data trains the robot directly. Therefore, the hand learns real manufacturing skills instead of following pre-programmed motions alone.
