Description
Tiangong Ultra is a full-size humanoid robot from the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, also known as X-Humanoid. The center built it to push the limits of long-distance running. On April 19, 2025, it won the world’s first humanoid robot half marathon in Beijing. It finished the 21-kilometer race in 2 hours, 40 minutes and 42 seconds. As a result, it set a world record as the first humanoid to complete a half marathon.
Running that far is a major challenge for any robot. For example, constant foot strikes shake the body and wear down its parts. Long runs also heat up the joints and drain the battery. To solve this, the team balanced light weight with strong, shock-absorbing legs. In addition, they designed the joints to shed heat, so the robot could keep running without overheating.
Smart software played an equally important role. During the race, the robot followed a wireless guide signal instead of a human with a remote control. Meanwhile, it used its own sensors to track its position and adjust its speed and direction. The center’s Huisi Kaiwu embodied AI platform linked its “brain” for planning with its “cerebellum” for balance. Therefore, it stayed stable on turns, slopes and rough road surfaces.

My mission, together with the team, is to help your organization understand the landscape, compare solutions, and move toward successful robot deployments.
Tiangong Ultra serves mainly as a technology showcase rather than a product for sale. In fact, its record proves that full-size humanoids can run reliably for hours. The center plans to bring these lessons into future Tiangong robots. These robots could work in factories, sort goods in logistics or help in homes and elder care. In short, Tiangong Ultra marks a milestone for humanoid endurance and mobility.
