Description
Astra is a humanoid research robot from StarBot, a robotics company in Santa Barbara, California. StarBot released it in July 2026 as its second-generation humanoid. The robot stands about 5 feet tall and walks on two legs. StarBot designed it for universities, research institutes and R&D teams. In addition, the company stresses that it builds its robots entirely in the USA.
Astra focuses on how robots move and learn. For example, researchers can use it to study motion control and reinforcement learning. They can also test sim-to-real transfer, where skills learned in simulation carry over to the real robot. Moreover, the robot works with NVIDIA Isaac simulation. Therefore, teams can train behaviors virtually before trying them on hardware.
StarBot built Astra on years of hands-on motion work. The team started with walking, balancing and dance research in 2025. Later, it refined grasping and object handling, and then launched a wheeled service robot called Nova. As a result, Astra draws on both lab research and real-world service experience. It can even run at up to 3 meters per second, according to StarBot.

My mission, together with the team, is to help your organization understand the landscape, compare solutions, and move toward successful robot deployments.
Astra also aims to make humanoid research more affordable. Its price starts at about $10,000, which is low for a full-body research humanoid. Meanwhile, a quick one-hour charge keeps lab downtime short. Interested teams can reserve a unit with a small deposit. In short, Astra gives schools and labs an accessible entry into humanoid robotics research.
