Description
REEM-C is a full-size biped humanoid robot from PAL Robotics, a company based in Barcelona, Spain. PAL Robotics introduced it in 2013 as its first humanoid built for research. The robot stands 165 cm tall and weighs 80 kg. As a result, it roughly matches the size of an average adult. Universities and research labs use it to study walking, balance, manipulation and artificial intelligence.
Moreover, REEM-C moves in ways inspired by human motion. It walks stably, climbs stairs and can even sit down on a chair. Its body offers 68 degrees of freedom, including highly articulated hands. In addition, torque sensors in the ankles and wrists help it keep its balance and react to physical contact. The robot also grasps light objects and speaks more than 30 languages.
On the software side, REEM-C runs Ubuntu Linux and ROS. For this reason, researchers can program it in C++, Python or other common languages. The robot comes with ready-made skills such as walking, grasping, whole-body control and text-to-speech. Furthermore, an open-source simulation model lets teams test their ideas before they try them on real hardware. PAL Robotics also offers extra software for navigation, human-robot interaction and teleoperation.

My mission, together with the team, is to help your organization understand the landscape, compare solutions, and move toward successful robot deployments.
Today, PAL Robotics lists REEM-C among its legacy robots. However, the platform still holds an important place in the company’s history. It paved the way for later humanoids such as TALOS and Kangaroo. Over the years, many research groups have used it to push the limits of biped locomotion. In short, REEM-C helped turn humanoid robotics into a practical research tool.
