Description
Phoenix Gen 8 is a general-purpose humanoid robot from Sanctuary AI, a robotics company based in Vancouver, Canada. Sanctuary released this eighth generation in December 2024, less than eight months after Gen 7. Unlike earlier versions, Gen 8 rolls on a wheeled base instead of walking on two legs. Customers told Sanctuary that legs were too frail to support a strong upper body. As a result, the wheeled design helps the robot work more precisely and safely.
Sanctuary built Gen 8 mainly to capture high-quality training data for its AI. For this reason, the company upgraded its cameras for a wider view and sharper images. It also improved the robot’s sensors, audio, video and data recording systems. In addition, Sanctuary cut costs and simplified the design so teams can build and commission robots faster. This data helps ground Sanctuary’s AI in real-world physical experience.

The robot’s hands stand out most. Each hand uses tiny hydraulic valves and has 21 degrees of freedom, close to the dexterity of a human hand.
