Description
Light Origins is a Chinese robotics startup founded in Shenzhen in August 2024. Roger Jiang, a former OpenAI researcher who helped build GPT-4, leads the company. Since Jiang spent years working on reinforcement learning at OpenAI, he applies that same philosophy to physical robots. The company now employs more than 100 people, and over 90 percent work directly in research.
Lightbot-0 stands just 90 centimeters tall, making it noticeably smaller than many rival humanoids. Because of its compact size, the robot reads more like a research platform than a factory-ready machine. A single onboard policy controls its walking, balancing, climbing, and jumping. This approach differs sharply from older robots, which often needed separate programs for each individual skill.
Engineers trained Lightbot-0 almost entirely in simulation using reinforcement learning. During training, the robot practiced countless movements and earned rewards for staying balanced and avoiding mistakes. In one widely shared demo, the team tied Lightbot-0’s legs together to test its adaptability. Instead of falling over, the robot found a way to crawl free and stand back up on its own.

Light Origins also showed Lightbot-0 climbing steps and performing parkour-style moves around obstacles. According to the company, the robot switches between skills successfully about 98 percent of the time. This flexibility matters because real environments rarely match a robot’s training data exactly. For now, Light Origins keeps Lightbot-0 firmly in the research phase, so a commercial version has no confirmed release timeline yet.
