CALVIN-40

Wandercraft built Calvin-40 in just 40 days, drawing on twelve years of exoskeleton expertise. The French company designed this autonomous humanoid for the heaviest, most physically demanding tasks on the factory floor. Unlike most humanoids that grab headlines at trade shows, Calvin-40 already works inside real production lines. Indeed, Renault deployed one at its Douai EV plant in April 2025. It hauls tires for the Renault 5 there. Today, the robot represents the first member of a broader Calvin family of next-generation industrial humanoids.

The robot inherits its core technology from Wandercraft’s medical exoskeletons. Over the past decade, those self-balancing devices have helped people with severe mobility impairments walk again. More than 100 Atalante units now operate in hospitals across four continents, collectively taking over a million steps every month. Consequently, Calvin-40 launches with a proven movement foundation rather than a research prototype. Wandercraft’s engineers reused the actuators, the balance control, and the medical-grade safety software. Then they paired all of this with industrial end-effectors, advanced vision, and reasoning powered by large language models.

Operators give Calvin-40 instructions by voice, and it interprets each task through its vision system and on-board reasoning. Cameras mounted at the waist read the surroundings in both day and night conditions. Force sensors in the feet keep the robot balanced on uneven ground. Meanwhile, LED light strips signal its status to nearby workers. People always know what it plans to do next. The hands themselves are modular. As a result, the same robot can swap to grippers, suction cups, or dexterous hands as needed.

Renault Group took a minority stake in Wandercraft in June 2025. It plans to deploy 350 Calvin-40 units across its EV factories by 2027. The automaker wants the robots to relieve workers from repetitive, ergonomically harsh tasks like loading panels and tires. Similarly, the Italian Tier-1 supplier Sapa Group signed on in late 2025 to bring Calvin-40 into its plastic-component plants. Wandercraft markets Calvin-40 to industrial partners only. The robot does not appear in any consumer catalog. Instead, the company sells deployments built around specific tasks. Wandercraft tunes each robot for the workflow it will actually run.
