Description

Menlo Research is preparing Asimov 2 as the next step in its open humanoid platform. Asimov 1 ships as a DIY kit without hands. Menlo describes Asimov 2 differently: a deployment-ready, bimanual robot built for real work. The company hasn’t announced a launch date yet, so the robot remains in active development. Still, Menlo’s roadmap makes its ambition clear: get closer to a state-of-the-art humanoid before Asimov 5 arrives.

If Asimov 2 follows Asimov 1’s foundation, expect a similar overall build. Picture a compact, open-source humanoid around the same height and weight. However, the biggest change appears to be genuine hands. For the first time, an Asimov robot should be able to actually grasp, hold, and manipulate objects. This alone would move the platform from pure locomotion research toward real manipulation tasks. Asimov 1 could never attempt that out of the box.

Because Menlo hasn’t confirmed any of this officially, treat every number here as an educated estimate rather than a hard spec. Menlo built its reputation on open hardware, so Asimov 2 will likely stay open source too, just like its predecessor. The bimanual, work-ready framing also suggests a shift. Asimov 2 may move away from a pure DIY kit toward something closer to a finished platform. Even so, expect Menlo to keep costs relatively low compared to typical commercial humanoids. Affordability sits at the center of the company’s whole mission.

Asimov 2 will likely target the same core audience as Asimov 1: researchers, robotics labs, and technically minded developers. However, added manipulation capability could also attract manufacturers exploring light assembly or logistics use cases, at least experimentally. No official price exists yet. But given the added hardware and Menlo’s positioning, a build cost meaningfully above Asimov 1’s $20,000 seems reasonable. Until Menlo shares real specs, think of Asimov 2 as a promising direction rather than a finished product.
