Boston Dynamics spins out Dynamic Creatures for robot entertainment
Boston Dynamics is spinning out its hospitality and entertainment business into a company called Dynamic Creatures. In a LinkedIn post, former Boston Dynamics chief strategy officer and go to market leader Marc Theermann said he is building the venture with Farbod Farshidian, whom he described as a leading voice in robot control and learning, as well as a new team and Boston Dynamics.
The proposed Dynamic Creatures robots are intended to occupy a gap between task oriented service machines, such as cleaning robots, and stationary animatronics that replay fixed motion sequences. Theermann said the characters would move through guest environments, interpret the context of an encounter and respond in real time. Those capabilities remain company claims. The post provides no technical evidence or details about the robots’ hardware, autonomy, safety systems or testing.
The business case centers on guest engagement rather than labor saving task completion. Dynamic Creatures sees potential applications in theme parks, red carpet events, hotels, casinos and retail environments. Theermann named Eniac Ventures, Kindred Ventures, Heliad, Sunshine Lake, Bluegrass Ventures, Marc Raibert and Lukas M. Ziegler among the venture’s early investors and partners. No funding amount, product launch timetable or initial deployment was disclosed.
