Description

Xiao Di (“Little D”) is the first self-developed humanoid robot from BYD, the Chinese automaker and the world’s largest maker of electric vehicles. BYD set up a dedicated embodied AI research team in 2022. On October 9, 2026, China’s patent office published BYD’s design patent for an “embodied AI robot,” showing Xiao Di’s shape for the first time. The patent describes a robot that walks, keeps its balance and interacts with its surroundings. At 161 cm tall, it stands at about the height of an average adult woman.

The robot has a clean, minimal design. A black-and-white body covers its many joints, with black ball-shaped joints at the shoulders, elbows, hips and knees. Notably, its rounded head has no screen, eyes or mouth. Analysts suggest this hides cameras and microphones while avoiding the “uncanny valley.” As a result, Xiao Di looks friendly yet neutral, rather than trying to act like a companion.

BYD plans to put Xiao Di to work in its car dealerships first. There, it would greet customers, explain vehicle features and demonstrate in-car infotainment systems. For example, its dexterous hands let it grasp light objects, gesture and point while it explains. In addition, executives have said each dealership could eventually host two or three robots. Reports say Xiao Di already appeared at BYD’s “Di Space” store in Zhengzhou in August 2026, although BYD has not officially confirmed this.

Xiao Di is part of a broader BYD robotics strategy. For example, BYD invested in AgiBot in 2023 and later in tactile sensor maker Paxini. Meanwhile, it has tested other companies’ humanoids, such as UBTECH’s Walker S1, in its own factories. BYD has not yet announced a launch date, price or production plan for Xiao Di. In short, it marks BYD’s first step from building cars toward building humanoid robots for its own retail network.
