Description
Tau Humanoid is the cleaning robot behind Tau Robotics, a San Francisco startup founded in 2024. Instead of selling robots, Tau rents them out as a home cleaning service. Customers book a one-hour visit for $30 per robot, and two robots usually work together. The robots vacuum floors, wipe counters, clean fridges and take out the trash. As a result, Tau offers one of the first real-world humanoid cleaning services for everyday homes.
The robots don’t work fully on their own yet. Instead, trained human operators guide them remotely, with help from AI. For example, AI handles balance and smooth motion, while a person directs the cleaning tasks. Tau openly says current AI can’t run a humanoid alone in a messy, real home. Therefore, it combines human skill with AI to deliver useful work today.
Tau builds its robots on a compact humanoid body from Unitree and adds its own key parts. In particular, it designed custom cameras, gripping “claws” and an onboard computer. Cameras on the head and wrists record each visit to train Tau’s AI models. Each robot even has a name, such as Chelsea, Elon or Tony, and wears a black Tau uniform. Moreover, a one-way speaker lets the operator talk to the homeowner, while the microphones stay off.

Tau launched the service in July 2026 on an invite-only basis in San Francisco. The company plans to reach 1,000 cleanings a week by 2027 and then expand to other cities. Over time, the data from each visit should help the robots work more independently. However, an adult must currently stay home during every visit. In short, Tau aims to make robot home cleaning affordable while building toward full autonomy.
