Description

Handroid is a transformable desktop robot that works as both a dexterous hand and a small humanoid. Researchers from UNC Chapel Hill and Stanford University, including robotics experts C. Karen Liu and Shuran Song, developed it. Most robots have a fixed body shape that limits what they can do. In contrast, Handroid reuses the same compact modules as fingers, arms, legs or base motors. As a result, it acts as a hand when a task needs manipulation and as a humanoid when it needs to move.

As a hand, Handroid can pour water, stack cups, pick up paper and even grasp a basketball. In addition, it can turn a cube in its fingers using a skill learned in simulation. As a humanoid, it squats, walks forward and backward, turns, and even does push-ups and pull-ups. Moreover, it can switch between both forms during a single, longer task. The team made it fully 3D-printed and shares its design files and parts list. Therefore, it gives researchers an accessible platform for studying both dexterous manipulation and humanoid movement.
