Description

The Multi-fingered Hand is a human-sized robotic hand from Honda R&D, the research arm of Japan’s Honda. Honda describes it as the only hand that combines dexterity, power and durability at true human scale. Most robotic hands must choose between fine control and raw strength. In contrast, Honda’s hand can thread a needle yet also grip with real force. As a result, it can use everyday tools designed for people, such as scissors and screwdrivers.

Honda built the hand to work reliably over long periods. For example, it completed over 450,000 test cycles, including thousands of lifts with a 5 kg weight. In addition, it detects sudden impacts and instantly softens its fingers to absorb the blow. Touch sensors across the fingers and palm, plus force sensors in each fingertip, let it handle delicate objects with care. Therefore, Honda sees it as a step toward robots that work alongside people in daily life.
