Description

GAC Group unveiled GoMate in Shanghai on December 26, 2024. This Chinese automaker built its name on cars, producing more than 2.5 million vehicles each year. Since GAC already leads in autonomous driving technology, the company reused much of that expertise for GoMate. As a result, GoMate represents the third generation of GAC’s in-house embodied AI robots.

GoMate switches between two very different postures depending on the task at hand. In its stable four-wheel mode, the robot stands about 1.4 meters tall and saves energy while moving. When more reach or dexterity helps, GoMate rises onto two wheels and stretches to 1.75 meters. This flexible wheel-leg design lets one robot handle both stability and height on demand.

Underneath its shifting body, GoMate runs on GAC’s own autonomous-driving algorithms adapted for humanoid use. The robot builds detailed indoor and outdoor maps through a technique called FIGS-SLAM, so it can pinpoint its location with centimeter-level accuracy. Cloud-based AI models also let GoMate respond to spoken commands almost instantly. Meanwhile, operators can switch to full VR remote control whenever a task calls for direct human guidance.

GAC first plans to deploy GoMate inside its own factories, handling jobs like quality inspection on production lines. Beyond the auto industry, the company sees potential in security, elderly care, and logistics work. However, GoMate remains in early testing rather than everyday commercial use today. GAC aims to begin small-scale production in 2026, with broader manufacturing to follow after that.
