Description

Shimizu Corporation, one of Japan’s largest construction firms, began testing humanoid robots on real job sites in 2026. The company launched this Physical AI initiative to fight a severe labor shortage across Japanese construction. Since fewer skilled workers enter the trade each year, Shimizu sees robots as a practical way to keep sites running. The company is also developing a separate robotic arm that learns painting tasks by imitating human workers.

Shimizu tested its humanoid robot at the Tokiwabashi Project, the site of Torch Tower, Japan’s future tallest building. The robot walks its site autonomously while holding a camera and following a pre-set route. As it moves, the robot senses real-world conditions and adjusts its own judgment along the way. This capability sets it apart from older jobsite robots, which needed constant human support to move at all.

Multimodal large language models power the robot’s inspection work behind the scenes. These models analyze the footage the robot captures, helping engineers review site conditions faster. Shinichi Sakamoto, deputy general manager of Shimizu’s construction technology division, called this kind of autonomous decision-making “a completely new phenomenon” for job sites. Because the robot senses and reacts on its own, it needs far less oversight than earlier generations of construction robots.

For now, the robot remains in active field trials, so broader commercial rollout will likely follow only after further testing.
