Tau Robotics offers humanoid cleaning service in San Francisco

Tau Robotics has begun offering a humanoid cleaning service in San Francisco for $30 an hour to selected applicants, according to ABC News. The company is presenting the service as a home cleaning option rather than a robot sale, a distinction that keeps the focus on task completion and operator workflow instead of household ownership.

Alex Koch, CEO and cofounder of Tau Robotics, told ABC7 San Francisco that the service was made public this week. He said the target market includes people who did not previously use house cleaners often, or at all, and argued that lower cost robot assisted service could expand demand rather than simply replace existing human cleaners.

A teleoperated service, not fully autonomous cleaning

The most relevant technical detail is the control model. Koch said current artificial intelligence technology cannot fully control a humanoid robot on its own. Instead, a person operates the robot from a central location, with AI assisting the work.

That places Tau Robotics closer to a human operated robotics service than a fully autonomous home robot. For robotics operators, this is a familiar pattern: use remote operation to put hardware into real environments while collecting experience on manipulation, perception, and task sequencing. It also means labor has not disappeared from the service equation.

Videos provided by Tau Robotics show humanoid robots doing cleaning tasks. ABC News reported that one video was sped up and showed a robot exiting a minivan before a job. Ken Goldberg, a UC Berkeley engineering professor, cautioned that such clips can hide key operating conditions, including whether a human is controlling the robot, whether the environment was prepared, or whether the clip captures a best case attempt.

Useful chores remain narrow

Koch acknowledged the limits of the current system but said some household chores are already within reach. He cited vacuum cleaning as working well and described basic kitchen counter wiping as doable.

Goldberg pointed to harder examples: picking up objects from the floor, sweeping, wiping around and underneath items, and dealing with the clutter and variation of real homes. Those are exactly the kinds of manipulation problems that make domestic service a difficult test case for humanoid robots, even when remote operation is available.

For now, the Tau Robotics humanoid cleaning service appears to be a supervised deployment with a narrow chore set, not an autonomous house cleaner. The next useful evidence would be less polished: how long jobs take, what tasks are refused, how often remote operators intervene, and what customers actually receive for the $30 hourly rate.
