HELIOS

ORBIT Robotics HELIOS as a fast-moving humanoid robotics platform for space operations and research. The robot focuses on practical experimentation instead of polished presentation. Its design reflects the realities of working in orbit, where movement, balance, and manipulation differ greatly from Earth. Instead of relying on legs, HELIOS uses four coordinated arms to stabilize itself, navigate station interiors, and interact with tools or equipment in microgravity.

Unlike many humanoid robots that imitate human walking, HELIOS takes a more specialized approach. The platform treats its arms as both mobility tools and work instruments. As a result, the robot can anchor itself while performing delicate tasks in confined environments. Furthermore, the four-arm layout allows parallel manipulation and stronger control during complex operations. This makes the system especially relevant for future space stations and orbital laboratories.

The engineering team built HELIOS rapidly under real-world constraints. ORBIT completed the first platform in only two months, which highlights the company’s emphasis on iteration and hands-on testing. The robot also supports teleoperation and autonomous policy experiments at the same time. Therefore, researchers can refine manual control while training AI-driven behaviors in parallel. This flexible workflow helps the platform evolve quickly.

HELIOS combines lightweight mechanical design with strong functional capability. Its tendon-driven arm system keeps heavy motors near the shoulders, which reduces moving mass and improves agility. Meanwhile, the rolling contact elbow joint provides smooth and controlled motion without sacrificing durability. Although HELIOS remains an early prototype, the project already demonstrates how future space robots may prioritize adaptability, efficiency, and cooperative manipulation over traditional humanoid movement.
